WFMW Back to School: What is 100?

Though we have done some homeschooling already, my oldest starts "official" homeschool kindergarten next week. It will be the first time we have followed a real schedule. With this in mind, I have been reviewing some of what my girls have already learned and preparing them for this school year.

Yesterday we did a fun activity that helped them with their numbers and counting skills. This would be a great prep for kids who are about to go back to school. It would also be a great activity for homeschool anytime.

My girls love to learn, and they are constantly asking questions. Lately, they have been asking lots of questions about numbers. One of those has been, "How much is 100?" We told them that if you had ten piles of something, with ten items in each pile, that all together it would be 100. That's a little bit easier to understand, but still a hard concept for a 5 and 3 year old.

Yesterday I did my 100th blog post, so I decided to give them a fun project to help me out. In the process, we would learn about the number 100.

Our first step was to count out ten groups of Mega Bloks, with ten blocks in each pile. I explained to them that all of the groups together made 100 blocks.

Then I let them build something using only those 100 blocks. I left the room so that they could surprise me with their finished project. And here it is... (In case you can't tell, it's a robot.)

I then used the photo of the finished project in my 100th post. The girls love being a part of my blog, and it was great fun to them knowing that their creation is in my post.

Using fun activities to review what we have learned definitely works for us, as we prepare to go "back to school."
